The GCC Interconnection

Our Network

GCCIA’s network forms a robust super grid linking the electrical networks of the GCC member states, operates at 400kV with a frequency of 50Hz, ensuring efficient power transmission across member countries through its 7 substations, connected through overhead lines and submarine cables; the interconnection also features a unique adaptation for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s 60Hz grid through a specialized Back-to-Back HVDC station, allowing seamless integration and stable power exchange. To ensure reliability, the overhead lines are designed with double circuits, allowing for continuous power flow even if one circuit experiences a fault. All member states connect directly to the GCCIA grid, with the exception of the Sultanate of Oman, which is connected via the United Arab Emirates' electricity network.

Al-Zour SubstationServes as a critical connection point between the GCCIA grid and the Kuwaiti grid at 275 kV, enhancing the grid’s operational flexibility and reliability.

Al-Fadhili SubstationA 400kV switching substation that forms a vital node within the GCCIA network, facilitating the efficient distribution and transmission of electricity across the region.

Ghunan SubstationOperating as a 400kV switching substation, Ghunan plays a pivotal role in maintaining the stability and distribution efficiency of the GCCIA grid.

Al-Jasra SubstationThis substation connects the GCCIA grid with Bahrain’s grid at 220 kV, ensuring a stable and reliable power supply to the Kingdom.

Salwa SubstationAs a 400kV switching substation, Salwa is crucial for managing the power flow and supporting the overall reliability of the interconnected grid.

Logistic Zone Super (LZS) SubstationThis substation connects the GCCIA grid with Qatar’s grid at 400 kV, providing a robust link for efficient electricity exchange.

Al-Sila SubstationA key 400kV switching substation, Al-Silla connects the GCCIA grid with the UAE grid, enhancing the region’s energy security and integration.

HVDC StationA state-of-the-art converter station that integrates the 50Hz GCCIA grid with the 60Hz Saudi grid, enabling seamless power exchange between different frequencies.

400kV Overhead Transmission LinesSpanning approximately 913 km, these double-circuit overhead lines traverse the challenging desert terrains, reinforcing the grid’s resilience, ensuring reliability and availability of services. These lines are constructed with double circuit towers to optimize costs and minimize land corridor requirements.

Submarine CablesTwo submarine cables, with a length of 50 km, link the GCCIA grid with Bahrain's Al-Jasra substation, securing a reliable underwater power connection with the island nation.
